The End of Zionism?
Shmuel Trigano

Who can imagine, in the light of the results of the elections to the 26th Knesset, that everything can carry on as before? The capture of 19 seats by the so-called “Arab” parties changes the equation in every respect and reveals what has already changed. It is not merely the number of seats won that makes the difference. It is the fact that the “Jewish” parties can no longer command a majority except by entering into compulsory agreements with their “Jewish” competitors, forced to submit to their terms under the threat that those competitors might ally themselves with the Arab votes. In a word, the Jewish parties no longer have a majority. When they do have one, it will be against their Jewish rivals, which will entail a deterioration of political life on every level.
This distinction nevertheless remains theoretical in view of the reality on the ground, which is very clear and immediate. I am not speaking only of the corruption of the Arab vote through Qatari money, a scandal exposed on election night whose consequences are not yet known. I have other scenes in mind. In Nazareth, the results were greeted with the Palestinian national anthem, Biladi. A former member of the Knesset, Osama Saadi, dedicates the victory “to the sons of our people, in Gaza, in the West Bank and in occupied Jerusalem, to the prisoners in Israeli jails”—those who have blood on their hands and whom Israel rightly describes as terrorists…
What must the parents of the hostages, of the men killed in combat, of those caught in the turmoil of October 7, whose wounds have not yet healed, be feeling? And what of that member of the Knesset, Mansour Abbas, leader of the Raam party, who cannot bring himself to describe Hamas as anything other than a charitable organization (in which he does indeed play a major role!)?
Why, incidentally, do we speak of “Arab” parties? Because these parties do not recognize the legitimacy of the “Zionist” parties—that is, of the State of Israel, of which they are, in principle, representatives. The attempt to require candidates for the Knesset to recognize the legitimacy of the State’s existence as an indispensable condition has failed, even though it is enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, which serves as a constitution. The Supreme Court bears some responsibility: it recognizes only individuals as legal subjects enjoying human rights, but not collective identities. This is the Israeli version of a worldwide problem facing democracies today, when human rights are set against citizens’ rights, even though democracy has existed in history only within the framework of the nation-state. Within that framework, “communities” (“minorities”) were able to develop under the overarching centrality of the nation, relinquishing all political autonomy in order to acquire the individual rights of citizenship. The “Arab” parties, then, are those that still define themselves as belonging to the “Palestinian people,” the only legitimate people in their eyes, of which they are already members on the territory of the State of Israel, whose legitimacy they otherwise deny. With their ability to obstruct the imperatives of the “Jewish” parties, they will necessarily undermine all the crucial issues confronting the “Zionist” parties, particularly the Muslim world’s war against the State of Israel, whereas no Israeli Arab has ever been required to perform military service. In short, they will have only rights (which does not prevent them from accusing the State and the nation of racism) and no duties towards the “nation.”
This divorce opens an abyss for the period ahead.
The mere presence of these parties in the Knesset, even if inactive, will prevent the (“Jewish”) parties from expressing any sentiment or taking any action, particularly when they seek to assume the international dimension conferred by the Jewish diaspora on the State of Israel, which is, as it were, the cultural, religious and civilizational homeland of dispersed Jewry. A whole range of activities and ceremonies will thus be forbidden—“genocide demands it!”—or deemed inappropriate, because Arab citizens are supposed to belong to another world (the Nakba). Proposing legislation on aliyah, discussing the compulsory Jewish education curriculum, singing Hatikvah, launching military operations against enemies: so many impossible acts that will run up against the demand for a “return” of Palestinian “refugees.”
The Jewish State is no longer at home in its own house! It is in the hands of squatters who have seized it while its tenants (the Israeli “left”) were absent from themselves.
History will account for the responsibility of the Israeli “progressive” left for this state of affairs: the hunt for a scapegoat in Netanyahu, the dismantling of the structures of Jewish identity, the distortion of democracy, the seizure of power by the judiciary…
The New Palestinian Strategy: Alter-Jihadism
We must, however, understand the transformations taking place in the process whose effects we are witnessing. I shall define it very simply. The Palestinians have changed their strategy. They no longer attack Israel so much from outside its borders as from within. The Oslo Accords did indeed establish the Palestinian Authority in the heart of the country, and therefore in the vicinity of Israel’s Arabs. Palestinian nationalism now attacks Israel from within Israel’s borders.
To understand this new situation, we must place the reality back within Arabic-language discourse. There is indeed one discourse intended for Muslim Arabs and another, ambivalent and very different, addressed to naive Westerners who play the role of those Lenin called “useful idiots.” “Muslim,” because the new discourse can only be understood through that prism: the prism of sharia, Islam’s politico-religious law. This is essential to understanding anything about the situation, because lying—taqiyya—is a religiously authorized strategy in global jihad. This is extensively documented, both as regards sharia and its use for jihadist ends: deceiving the enemy with words suited to the occasion, then rushing at him and subjugating him.
In recent years, however, jihadist strategy has evolved. Operation Shomer Homot / Guardian of the Walls (in 2021) against Hamas was paradigmatic, with the “pogrom” perpetrated in the city of Lod, where Israeli Arabs were seen launching surprise attacks on their Jewish fellow citizens. The October 7 attack fits perfectly into this framework: a surprise invasion, massive and murderous. Other jihadist parallels are apparent today: the surprise invasion of October 7 from Gaza, and, in another sphere, the invasion of Ceuta by 80,000 Moroccans. And what will happen tomorrow in Western Europe and Canada, reviving the saga of the Islamic invasions of Islam’s early centuries?
Today, the IDF is preparing for a surprise invasion that would come from Judea and Samaria. Around the shadow theatre of the Palestinian Authority in Samaria there is, in fact, a quasi-army of more than 70,000 Palestinian soldiers (“policemen”), armed and supported by the lamentable European Union. The next attack will come from there. It must be recalled that around 600,000 Israelis live in Judea and Samaria. They are there because this is the historical and strategic heart of the Land of Israel, which the invading army of Transjordan (capital: Amman) had reduced, in places in the country’s central region, to a strip of territory 15 kilometres wide during the 1948 War of Independence. That was when the “West Bank” came into being.
To hear Mansour Abbas, leader of the Raam party and champion of taqiyya, the Palestinian State already exists in the territories inside Israel. In this ambiguous way, he refers both to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah (Samaria), 15 kilometres from Jerusalem, and to the whole of Israeli territory. Why would he not ask the Israeli parliament for an autonomous administration in Galilee or the Negev, where there is a Jewish demographic deficit?…
This change of direction rests on an entire theological-political doctrine: civic jihad, the jihad of citizenship, as defined in a fatwa by Imam Qaradawi (1926–2022), based in Qatar and enjoying great influence in the Muslim world, particularly in Europe and the Americas. Qaradawi distinguishes between different jihads. Today, economic and financial jihad, like media jihad (Al Jazeera), can draw on Qatari money, as can intellectual jihad, which converts Western universities through extensive funding. Qatar can rely on Erdogan’s Turkey to compensate for its small size—a Turkey with a substantial presence in the West itself.
This is the origin of the alliance between far-left politics and Islamism that is flourishing in France, England, Italy and the Americas (LFI in Paris, Mandani in New York, Al Sayed in Minneapolis). The penetration of the Western political and democratic sphere (parliaments, city halls, institutions) is in fact preparing a seizure of power when the moment is favourable.
With the October 7 massacre and the election of the 16th Knesset, we hold the two ends of the same rope of jihad…
